Steps

  1. Gently form the ground beef into patties, about 1-inch thick. Avoid overworking the meat.
  2. Season both sides of the patties generously with salt and pepper.
  3. Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 3-5 minutes per side for medium-rare.
  4. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
  5. Lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in the skillet.
  6. Assemble the burgers with lettuce, tomato, and your favorite condiments.
